USS EDWARD McDONNELL was the third GARCIA - class frigate. Commissioned as a destroyer escort, the ship was redesignated as a frigate on June 30, 1975. Decommissioned on September 30, 1988, and stricken from the Navy list on December 15, 1992, the EDWARD McDONNELL was sold for scrapping on July 25, 1995. Scrapping was completed on August 21, 2002.

March 5, 1975	Hamburg, West Germany	USS EDWARD McDONNELL is struck from astern by a Finish merchant ship while entering the port of Hamburg, West Germany, in rain and fog. The collision opens an eight-foot-square hole above the waterline of the EDWARD McDONNELL.
