| 1987 | off the US West Coast | In late June or early July, USS NEVADA suffers a breakdown while conducting routine operations following the improper installation of a power transmission gear during a February to April maintenance stop at Newport News Shipyard, Va. The damage is estimated at several million dollars and causes NEVADA to cancel a special call at its new home port of Bangor, Wash. In response to queries the Navy say "The safety of the ship and crew was never an issue and the ship is continuing its operations." |
